You’ve been doing your best.
You have made the commitment to be the best at your business.
You are doing the same stuff that a million other entrepreneurs are doing.
So why wouldn’t you stand out in the heap of ideas.
You follow the advice, write down your goals, network, find opportunities and exploit them etc.
All your efforts have produced an idling start up that’s burning up expensive fuel.
Doubts have crept in and sunk their tentacles deep inside your brain.
You wonder if you really have a shot or you are meant to be a failure since the people who are successful effusively proclaim these methods as guaranteed success keys.
May I be brutally candid?
This will feel like you been sucker punched but the feeling will pass and you will be grateful (probably pissed why I haven’t pointed this out already!).
The truth is you’ve just been winging it because you thought that you had to do it on your own.
Or maybe you thought that those who came before you were archaic and would not understand.
Lately dark days fill your existence when you feel like everything is pointless.
You hurtle from one problem to the next cannot be blamed on the advice you have been given.
You have pivoted a number of times but it hasn’t worked.
It’s not because of your jealous relatives. It’s not because 90% of all start-up flop.
It’s because you are foolish.
Why do you think that you can do everything on your own?
If you are so conceited you definitely need to idle for a while longer.
But if you want to succeed, it’s time you smarten up.
Did I really call you a fool?
Yes I did. Sorry for hurting your feelings but not sorry for calling you out on your behavior.
Ecc 10:15 The labour of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.
So all along you have been foolish and it has exhausted you.
You are moving in circles and you do not know how to get “to the city”.
One thing that could help you look wiser is a MENTOR.
We can learn a lot from people who succeeded in the bible and other people from different human epochs.
Joshua had Moses, the disciples had Jesus, Ruth had Naomi. Even in the world you will realize that the most successful people have mentors who have helped them break-out.
The bible is not just some old book written in barely readable language. It answers to the questions of life such as success and peace of mind.
It does not matter what you are doing you need a mentor if you want to move ahead quickly.
The Overlooked Bonanza of Having A Mentor
Instead of shooting in the dark, there is a quicker and effective way of building your enterprise.
You have a limited number of people in your network and most of them are not in a position to open doors for you.
Mat 10:16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
In comparison, your mentor has a wide network. Access to this network will be a game changer.
Your mentor will give you access to a bigger group of people and s/he offers you referrals to potential clients.
This will help you grow your influence and customer base.
Building trust will potential clients takes time however it is easy when you have a mentor
Pro_22:1 A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.
Ecc_7:1 A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one’s birth.
Since you are just beginning you do not have a good name.
You are just one among a million wannabe entrepreneurs.
Potential clients will not take the risk of putting their business strategies in the hands of an unknown entity.
The reason you will be given opportunities is because your potential clients will be aware that your mentor will not endorse a incompetent person for a business project.
So a mentor’s good name is more persuasive than any posturing you could ever do.
The Advantage The Old Have Over The Young
Well, at least some of them.
We live in a society that doesn’t value old people.
They are considered a drain.
We make jokes about their technophobia.
We flippantly deride their ideas as old school and irrelevant in our “progressive” society.
Whilst some old people are not deep well of wisdom, they are other who will provide you with great insights that will help you get ahead even if their ideas have nothing to do with your business.
So, it is not a bad idea to listen to them. Because business basics are the same whether you are a baby boomer or a millennial.
Honestly, you are a young person with a limited worldview.
You have only just begun to live.
It’s pragmatic to have someone in your life who has navigated to the position that you want to get so that they assist you navigate the paths that you are about to go through.
Mentors are a guide especially when you feel you are surrounded by darkness.
Jdg_18:5 And they said unto him, Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.
Pro_24:6 For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war: and in multitude of counsellors there is safety.
1Ki_12:8 But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:
1Ki_12:9 And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?
1Ki_12:13 And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men’s counsel that they gave him;
1Ki_12:14 And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.
Your mentor’s experience limits the risk factor and they shield you from unnecessary hard lessons that will destroy your business progress.
Technology does not represent a change of principles and the laws of success.
Do not be too quick to write of the old people.
The above king made a grave mistake and he tore his nation in two with his haughtiness.
A mentor will help you hasten your journey.
Just like An Armed robber…..
You are lying on the couch and you have a deadline but you have been putting it off for weeks.
When you do cobble up something for the project, it is a mish-mash that will chase away clients and make them regret why they trusted you in the first place.
I remember how procrastination got me into trouble with my supervisor when I was doing my internship.
He had asked me to compile a list of organization’s clientele but I spent most of my time playing on the internet. When he asked for the document I gave him a scrap of paper and he was not impressed.
He chewed my head off and I was humiliated.
We let poverty come into our lives because we procrastinate and make excuse for failing.
But procrastination is like an armed robber. It steals the most valuable thing that you have.
Procrastination is ruthless and the consequences are devastating.
A mentor is not your friend who might feel comfortable with your present circumstance.
They will give you kick when you need it.
Pro 24:33 Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:
Pro 24:34 So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth; and thy want as an armed man.
A mentor is a defense against procrastination and excuse as you are accountable to someone for your written goals.
Also a mentor will ensure that your standards are high so inevitably you will raise your standards.
How A Piece OF Paper In My Wallet Kept Me Alive
I sat inside the car as it idled.
I was fed up.
Nothing was going according to plan.
I reached for my wallet and I decided that it was time to get out of the doldrums.
I pulled out a piece of paper and I unfolded it. I read the words for the umpteenth time. I refolded the paper and stashed it in my wallet.
This paper contains words of encouragement written by my late grandmother.
This keeps fired up.
When I am down I take it out to read and remind myself that I have a vision and goals worth the hard work.
The paper helps me refocus.
Do you even have your goals written down or it is just an idea that is in your head?
A mentor will assist you to focus on important areas since they have been where you are.
They will give you goals that will speed up the time it takes to achieve a milestone.
Exo_17:14 And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.
Isa_30:8 Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever:
Hab 2:2 And the LORD answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.
Hab 2:3 For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.
You are then able to work out a lot of details as you flesh out the goal specifics.
A mentor helps you to be focused.
They narrow your vision to tasks and activities that enhance your business.
How An Internet Relationship Made Me Thousands
“Listen mate I have a proposition for you.”
“I have a friend of mine who needs some help and I thought of you?”
“How may I be of assistance?”
“He needs a book written and he will pay …”
$$ Ching-ching $$
One of my mentors (Who lives in Australia) got me a job that paid some good money and it was not the only opportunity.
Whenever he comes across some writing business he emails me and tells me about the opportunities.
A mentor has your best interests at heart.
There is no mentor who wants their protégée to fail.
So they will go the extra mile to make sure that you achieve breakthrough success.
In other words they will give you access to opportunities that will get you more clients.
Opportunities that you might not have access to because you are outside that person’s orbit;
Mat 25:14 For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods.
Mat 25:15 And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.
Mat 25:16 Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents.
Mat 25:17 And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two.
Mat 25:18 But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord’s money.
Mat 25:19 After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them.
Mat 25:20 And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more.
Mat 25:21 His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
Mat 25:22 He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.
Mat 25:23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.
Mat 25:24 Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed:
Mat 25:25 And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.
Mat 25:26 His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed:
Mat 25:27 Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury.
Mat 25:28 Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents.
The man gave his servants an opportunity to create wealth.
The use of the opportunity is a topic for another blog post.
These servants would have never been given the opportunity had they not had a relationship with their master.
He probably knew their work ethic and he therefore gave them access according to their capacities.
If you have a mentor they will definitely not only be on the lookout for their own businesses but they will also put you in consideration when assessing opportunities.
It’s Up to You
Is it possible that you have not been aware that you are inside a dark cave?
A cave that has limited you to painful experiences as you have fumbled and bumped against rocks trying to find a way out.
Maybe at this present moment you just do not have what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur on your own.
But then again, even the successful entrepreneurs always have mentors.
If you want to succeed you have to change the way you have been doing things.
Instead of hurtling towards problem after problem you will begin to see the increase in number of paying clients.
It’s totally up to you!
