A Practical Guide To Crafting An Epic Life

You have heard it over and over again.

Maybe you have even taken the step and done it.

“You must have a vision board if you want to succeed.”

“You should look at it the first thing in the morning and the last thing when you drift off to slay the dragons in your dreams.”

So you go through the hassle of downloading pictures or cutting up magazines and after some time you put together your precious visual of how your life should be.

Your motivational speaker or life coach would be proud of the amazing graphic.

You are convinced that this will assist you in your journey.

In fact it does help you in a sense.

You have a clear picture of what you want.

There’s just one challenge.

After all the effort, that is all you get.

A clear, graphic detail of what you want out of life.

No progress. No realization of the dream. No trendsetting lifestyle.

What went wrong?

How the Vision Board Advice Can Lead Down A Crooked Path

So what did you do wrong?

After all you followed the master advice of creating a vision board.

What’s makes successful people different?

Are they part of some secret organization (illuminati) do they channel the occult (witchcraft)?

Why ACTION Is Your Best Friend If You Want To Succeed

Have you ever wondered why access to some places not granted to everyone?

Why some clubs are exclusively reserved for a particular group of people.

I have had the privilege to spend time at top rated hotels, bumping into influential political and corporate leaders.

I knew that I would not have had the privilege to access such places, if it had not been for my job.

I know I would never have had exotic dishes like teppanyaki.

What was the difference between me and the people I associated with when I was in these spaces?

Having a dream is important but this post is not about how to find your dreams.

Life demands more from us if our lives are not to be lived elusively.

Once you know your dream or you have discovered your talent, the rules change as you enter another level in the pursuit of an epic life.

It’s no longer about the dream but what are you going to do with or to the dream?

So to help you navigate the next stage of your journey let us look at the four practical tools you will need.

Let’s All Be Obedient Like Sheep…

You are the sum of all your imaginations.

Everything that you have or don’t have is a result of the mental picture you have about yourself.

Judith Mate and Ellen Frankel in their book Beyond A Shadow of A Diet illustrated that,” Researchers have reported that a mere 3 minute exposure to photographs to models taken from popular Women’s magazines led to increase in depression, stress, shame, insecurity and body image dissatisfaction.”

Whilst the preceding is a negative example of image usage it holds true that exposure to images that enforce a positive agenda will lead to “good” feelings.

I know that you know the secret of the vision board.

A vision board is a picture book of the life you want.

I have one that I created a couple of years ago.

I downloaded pictures that represented the life I wanted and they covered my business, ministry and home life.

This is a concept that God used with Abraham

Gen 15:1  After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

Gen 15:2  And Abram said, Lord GOD, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?

Gen 15:3  And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.

Gen 15:4  And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.

Gen 15:5  And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.

Abraham was given a mental image of his heritage. In another instance Jacob used the art of visualization to get riches:

Gen 31:1  And he heard the words of Laban’s sons, saying, Jacob hath taken away all that was our father’s; and of that which was our father’s hath he gotten all this glory.

Gen 31:2  And Jacob beheld the countenance of Laban, and, behold, it was not toward him as before.

Gen 31:3  And the LORD said unto Jacob, Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee.

Gen 31:4  And Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field unto his flock,

Gen 31:5  And said unto them, I see your father’s countenance, that it is not toward me as before; but the God of my father hath been with me.

Gen 31:6  And ye know that with all my power I have served your father.

Gen 31:7  And your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God suffered him not to hurt me.

Gen 31:8  If he said thus, The speckled shall be thy wages; then all the cattle bare speckled: and if he said thus, The ringstraked shall be thy hire; then bare all the cattle ringstraked.

Gen 31:9  Thus God hath taken away the cattle of your father, and given them to me.

Gen 31:10  And it came to pass at the time that the cattle conceived, that I lifted up mine eyes, and saw in a dream, and, behold, the rams which leaped upon the cattle were ringstraked, speckled, and grisled.

Gen 31:11  And the angel of God spake unto me in a dream, saying, Jacob: And I said, Here am I.

Gen 31:12  And he said, Lift up now thine eyes, and see, all the rams which leap upon the cattle are ringstraked, speckled, and grisled: for I have seen all that Laban doeth unto thee.

Gen 31:13  I am the God of Bethel, where thou anointedst the pillar, and where thou vowedst a vow unto me: now arise, get thee out from this land, and return unto the land of thy kindred.

Gen 31:14  And Rachel and Leah answered and said unto him, Is there yet any portion or inheritance for us in our father’s house?

Gen 31:15  Are we not counted of him strangers? for he hath sold us, and hath quite devoured also our money.

Gen 31:16  For all the riches which God hath taken from our father, that is ours, and our children’s: now then, whatsoever God hath said unto thee, do.

God gave him a strategy to acquire wealth and he was treated differently by his uncle and his cousins.

Although he used visualization to influence animals the same concept operated in humans.

The mental images we see influence us.

Just like Jacob we can use mental pictures to take us out of dreary situations.

Note that this was not an overnight process.

It involves ACTION and perseverance.

A visual board creates a concrete image of what you want.

It becomes real and your mind engages with the picture and it replaces the vague image that you had before.

But a visual board on it’s on is not enough there are two things that you will need to do differently:

2Ki 5:1  Now Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, was a great man with his master, and honourable, because by him the LORD had given deliverance unto Syria: he was also a mighty man in valour, but he was a leper.

2Ki 5:10  And Elisha sent a messenger unto him, saying, Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean.

2Ki 5:11  But Naaman was wroth, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the LORD his God, and strike his hand over the place, and recover the leper.

2Ki 5:12  Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? So he turned and went away in a rage.

2Ki 5:13  And his servants came near, and spake unto him, and said, My father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean?

2Ki 5:14  Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God: and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.

First you will have to give up your ways of doing things, that is your habits and thought processes and commit to doing it God’s way.

It’s easy to believe that God has no conception of the challenges that we face in the world today.

I used to depend on doing things the world’s way but as a Christian that’s not what PECULIAR and Set Apart mean.

I diligently thought that doing it God’s way wasn’t sensible:

2Co 10:4  (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

2Co 10:5  Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Eph 6:10  Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

Eph 6:11  Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Eph 6:12  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Eph 6:13  Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Eph 6:14  Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

Eph 6:15  And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

Eph 6:16  Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

Eph 6:17  And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

Eph 6:18  Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

I had to let go of my expectations so that I could be fully in line with God’s plan and strategies.

The same way Naaman had to let go of what he wanted the prophet to do and do as he was directed.

There are four things that you need to do so that your visualization does not remain on the board as a pretty feel good picture that you look at from time to time.

It’s Time to Confess Everything

You need to verbalize or confess the things in the vision board.

The power of life and death is in the tongue.

The things you speak over your life or allow other people to speak into your life will determine your end.

You need to articulate your vision though the words you speak.

Maybe you have called yourself weak, maybe you have thought yourself unattractive or have heard yourself being described as foolish.

But the truth is that God has a different conception about you when you are IN Christ.

How to write a confession

Find a scripture that talks about what you are in Christ and the promises God has given:

Eph 2:10  For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

The confession would sound something like: I am God’s workmanship enabled to do good works and by God’s grace I am able to walk in them.

Speak the confession at every opportunity.

When you feel distressed or terrified speak the confession.

When people speak negative confession into your life rise up and oppose their confession with what scripture says about you.

There are so many scriptures that talk about how we have been redeemed, empowered and so much more.

The above scripture simple reinforces the idea that with God failure is impossible as long as you are working towards the purpose He has for your life.

It only takes a desire and a dedication to find out the awesome power you have.

Hear! Hear!

Do not give room to words that will negatively impact the image you have. When you hear something that is contrary speak the word only:

Rom 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Meditate upon the word of God and listen to ministers who speak the word only and are not using their own assumptions.

Have your ever observed how some parents kill their children’s destinies by calling them negative names when they err?

We have been witness too and sometimes we have been victims of thename calling.

Stop Being Lazy and Start to Weed Your Garden

Doing these things will help you guide your heart.

Life happens to all of us but that does not change God’s perception of who we are.

I have seen this life break people’s minds and hearts.

We live in a world where there is so much abuse, terror and insecurity.

I believe that it is the responsibility of the church to take a stand and face injustice and not to seek security for our own selves when the world is being torn asunder.

If our confession is Christ then then our actions do matter because we are called to speak life:

Proverbs 4:23 Amplified Bible (AMP)

23  Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life.

It is important to examine our lives so that your vision board is not contrary to God’s word but it is strategically in line with God’s plan for your life.

This is something that you should practice every day.

Just Do It Already!

The fourth thing you should do is take action.

A vision board is not the manifestation or the end goal.

This is where most Christians get it wrong.

We pray but we do not ACT on our faith.

We do not ACT on the mental picture that God has revealed to us about ourselves.

When things do not work its either we pray some more or we give up.

But without ACTION (works) we cannot please God because we are effectively saying that his grace and his thoughts towards us are useless.

As Christians we have to take steps to make sure that we are not living defeated lives because God didn’t create us to lose.

Ask the pertinent 5W question: What? How? Who? When? Where? And Why?

Remember that God says Isa 46:9  Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me,

Isa 46:10  Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:

He knows what is going to happen so it is better to ask him even as you wisely deliberate your strategies.

Luk 14:28  For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?

Luk 14:29  Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,

Luk 14:30  Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

Luk 14:31  Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?

Luk 14:32  Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.

This is not contrary advice to what I said earlier because it is God who will give you the answers to the questions about your strategy.

Rethink the Use of the Vision Board

The vision board on its own will not result in results you have to habitually exercise it with the four other steps so that clarity, confidence and the desire needed for manifestation are firmly established in the mind.

As you do this more, you will see results as you have created the right atmosphere through your actions of visualization, confession, hearing and guarding your heart.

Desiring to live an abundant life is not a sin.

Do not blame God for a mediocre life.

You are created to be much more than the scrounging and begging person that the world would like you to be so that you are considered a “real” Christian.
